Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are small non-coding RNAs that canonically repress gene expression at the post-transcriptional level by binding to complementary sequences on target mRNAs. MiRNAs act as part of a large ribonucleoprotein complex, known as an RNA-induced silencing complex (RISC), that can lead to mRNA degradation (e.g., decapping and deadenylation) and/or translation repression (e.g., preventing translation initiation). Computational and experimental analyses indicate that miRNAs target components of virtually every cellular process; however, the global inhibition of miRNA function in adult skeletal muscle (i.e., the deletion of core miRNA biogenesis proteins) is often indistinguishable from their wild-type counterparts. Debates surrounding if miRNAs have extended half-lives in these knockout models or if miRNAs are partly regulated by a Dicer-independent mechanism are still under investigation. This Special Issue focuses on the mechanisms by which miRNAs regulate adult skeletal muscle biology. We invite miRNA studies to investigate various aspects of adult skeletal muscle regulation, including (but not limited to) muscle regeneration, aging, and adaptation to different stimuli.
