Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

This Special Issue is devoted to energy system restructuring and deregulation in a smart city environment.

The concept of a smart city has already spurred increasing interest from citizens, public authorities, and technology vendors. As a critical element to the city functionality, the operation and management of energy systems (e.g., electricity, natural gas, heat, water) should evolve toward the smart city goal by meeting various economic, technical, and environmental requirements. In that regard, energy systems should be restructured and deregulated by taking full advantage of innovative technological and societal solutions, including advanced sensors and meters, sophisticated optimization and control paradigms, as well as structural and political reforms, to holistically optimize the entire process of energy generation, distribution, consumption, and storage. The recent advancement of information technology and operational technology should especially be seamlessly converged for achieving a higher degree of operational excellence of energy systems.

In this Special Issue, we invite submissions exploring cutting-edge research and development of energy system solutions toward a smart city. Both theoretical and experimental studies are welcome, as well as review papers and application reports.
