Dear Colleagues,
Agriculture is the activity that allowed humanity’s development of settlements, continued subsistence, trade and cultural and scientific practices. In recent years, the intensification of agriculture through specialization, such as increasing the size of production units and mechanization, has been the focus. This led to increased standards of living by providing an excess of resources from ecosystems (Green Revolution). However, these methods have led to ecosystem depletion, reduced the diversity of farming systems and, as a consequence, we know fewer ways to obtain food. In addition, other species are affected, including insects, herbaceous plants and microorganisms. Redesigning the agroecosystem based on ecological processes is mandatory, and research on the structure and internal relationships in agricultural systems is necessary to balance the needs of food production and environmental quality.
Aims and scope:
The aim of this Special Issue is to compile current research on agroecosystem functions in order to obtain efficient and sustainable techniques for food production systems.
The following topics are welcome:
- Plant varieties adapted to territories and climate change;
- Food quality and yields obtained via different sustainable farming methods;
- Water and soil conservation;
- Integrated systems;
- Circular economy applied to agriculture;
- Urban farming;
- Effects of natural fertilizers and pesticides on agroecosystems biodiversity;
- Organism for sustainable agriculture;
- Plant communities.

Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. Agronomy is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.
