Round 1

Reviewer 1 Report

Your study under lines the importance of evaluating the behaviour of the ancient grapevine varieties that could offer good options for the adaptation of viticulture to future climate conditions.

Substantive assessment

Tests (methodology and measurement scale) are needed to assess the resistance to drought stress of plants. There is no such methodology yet, and it is needed, not only in the cultivation of vines but also in cereals. In Poland, intensive research has been carried out for many years to understand the molecular mechanisms of barley tolerance to drought stress. In 2021 alone, more than 80,000 scientific papers on drought were published, but many come from observations under controlled conditions (greenhouses or breeding rooms). Yes, it allows for precise monitoring of environmental conditions, such as soil moisture, lighting, temperature and air humidity, as well as for continuous phenotypic observations of root development or above-ground parts. However, they do not always translate into later effects observed in the field. Therefore, systems are needed to assess and compare drought stress for different crops, also for red grapevines. A universal scale for assessing plants against drought stress is needed, as well as dedicated stations for monitoring and imitating drought in field conditions. Here it was a bit lacking in the methodology. This will allow the introduction of new varieties (but also older ones) with increased resistance to water shortage in the future.
In addition, there are already known methods of dealing with the stress of drought: to propagate those plants that have a well-developed root system or artificial irrigation.
It is necessary to correct the summary. It is unnecessary to list 3 separate fragments there.

Editorial evaluation
The SI system applicable in the world should be used, eg notation of units (the day has its symbol "d").
