Round 1

Reviewer 1 Report

1.      Please add some sentences to explain the symbols in Eqs. (1)-(4).

2.      Are the parameters listed in Table 1 sufficient for the simulation? What are the parameters for simulating failure and damage?

3.      There are many kinds of stress, please specify which stress is shown in Fig. 12 and Fig. 15.

4.      Why does contact force have unit of Pa rather than N in Fig. 16, Fig. 17, and Fig. 18?

5.      Reference 18 is empty.

6.      The presentation is unclear, and should be improved.

7.      Some essential information about finite element modeling is missing. How can other scholars repeat the presented results based on the current writing? Please provide as much information as possible, so that other researchers can repeat the simulation and validate the results.

Reviewer 2 Report

1.            The English language needs significant improvement. It is necessary to check the correctness of the use of technical terms, for example: Trauma, Post-crash fire, Occupied volume, the hardness design criteria, non-interactive failure criteria, etc.

2.            In section 2.1. Failure Criteria, the classification of criteria is very doubtful and not necessary for this article.

3.            Give a reference to the literature for Chang–Chang failure criteria.

4.            After formulas (1)-(4), give a description of all the parameters used.

5.            Section 2.1. Failure Criteria contains a very confusing and incomprehensible description of the post damage behavior.

6.            In section 3. Tail Design, the text about the conditions for spherical impactor is repeated twice. It is necessary to use a dot to separate the integer and decimal parts of the number.

7.            In section 3. Tail Design, it is necessary to specify exactly which composite materials were considered during modeling. Provide a complete list of mechanical properties used in modeling together with the sources of their obtaining.

8.            How are the above properties of epoxy resin E-862 obtained?

9.            In Figures 8 and 14 show all geometric dimensions.

10.          Figures 11, 12, 15 it’s impossible to see the numerical values of the results.

11.          A more detailed discussion of the results is needed. It is also necessary to prepare a short section 4. Conclusions.

12.          The scientific novelty and the obtained results cannot be evaluated, since the manuscript is very poorly written. It is necessary to rewrite the article in accordance with the standard scheme of the manuscript: Introduction, Methods, Results, Discussion, Conclusions.
