Gas-Phase Selective Oxidation of Methane into Methane Oxygenates
Round 1
Reviewer 1 Report
Xu et al. have reviewed the gas-phase selective oxidation of methane using Fe-,V-, Cu-, Mo- based catalysts. The topic is very interesting. Major revision is advised. Comments and suggestions are listed as follows.
1. There are many nice research works during the past 3-5 years. More current research literatures should be cited.
2. Some of the Figures were not clear enough, e.g. Figure 9 and 11.
3. The organization of the manuscript was generally clear. The metal (Fe-,V-, Cu-, Mo-) catalysts were seperated discussed in terms of their supports, promoters, and mechanism. But it is better to also review more deeply on the regulation of different catalysts in terms of the formation of metal-promoter/support interfaces, the variation on the active sites, and the spatial/geometric structures. It will be more convenced and interesting.
4. Table 1 listed the reported metal catalysts. Before the conclusion, the general comparison and efficiency as well as their normal catalytic conditions should be compared and discussed.

Reviewer 2 Report
The article is very interesting, well orginize and can be published as presented. Methane is an abundant resource and its direct conversion into value-added chemicals has been an attractive subject for its efficient utilization. Compared with the liquid-phase partial oxidation of methane, which frequently demands for strong oxidizing agents in protic solvents, gas-phase selective methane oxidation has some merits, such as the possibility of using oxygen as an oxidant and the ease of scale-up owing to the use of heterogeneous catalysts. In the paper, it is summarized recent advances in the gas-phase partial oxidation of methane into methane oxygenates, focusing mainly on its conversion into formaldehyde and methanol.
