Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

The COVID-19 pandemic has had a global impact on all people and sectors of activity, primarily due to restrictions on the mobility of governments and institutions to maintain social distance. The impact of COVID-19 has been brought to society's attention on the use of technology and the internet, economy, food industry, environment, urbanization, lifestyle and professional life, and physical and mental health of the population in general. From various fields, a divergence of the pandemic effects has been noted with the impact being both positive and negative in the same observed sector.

Over the course of the coronavirus COVID-19 pandemic, progressively more complete data have shed light on the tremendous variation in urban and rural education sustainability. Some areas have provided fully remote learning since the outset of the pandemic, while some have mostly provided in-person learning. Till the end of the year 2021, mostly rural areas were offering fully in-person education to students, while in a significantly lower percentage this form of education was offered to students based in urban areas. While the pandemic is global, the impacts are territorially different. Well-connected urban areas are among the first exposed to the pandemic. In rural areas, older and less healthy populations often faced limited healthcare capacity. This raises a question of the educational inequality between students in urban and rural areas, and can these differences be an obstacle for a long-run sustainable education and further social development or strongly based disadvantage?

Researchers worldwide are constantly giving their maximum to the examination of the pandemic COVID-19 phenomenon, so the proposed research topic aims to emphasize interdisciplinary research approaches in sustainable education process development between all educational fields.

Therefore, all researchers are invited and welcomed to contribute their reviews,  empirically researched contributions experimental, observational, and intervention studies to this special issue.

The research subject of this paper is the analysis of the attitudes of employees in pharmaceutical companies towards the business aspects of the pharmaceutical industry during and after the end of the pandemic in the Republic of Serbia. The aim is to examine the differences in the attitudes of employees, as well as to determine which variables predict the situations of endangering the professional reputation of pharmaceutical companies during the COVID-19 pandemic. The research was conducted by means of a survey during 2021 on a sample of 27 innovative and generic pharmaceutical companies. We used the SPSS program for descriptive statistics analysis, chi square test and binary logistic regression models. The findings show that there is a statistically significant difference in the expressed attitudes of employees in innovative and generic pharmaceutical companies in terms of coming to the office during the pandemic; the lack of medicines and medical devices used in the treatment of COVID-19 infections; the patient access to a chosen doctor; the expectations of the employees to continue working from home after the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic. The findings of the binary regression models show the slowdown in the supply chain, the access to doctors and working from the home office have not been perceived as creating situations of endangering professional reputations, that is, they contribute to the sustainable economic success. On the other hand, the introduction of digital technologies decreases the occurrence of conditions in which their professional reputation has been threatened. Full article

The subject of research in the paper is the capital structure of companies in the Republic of Serbia. The research sample consists of companies that operated in the manufacturing industry in the Republic of Serbia in the period 2006–2020. The aim of the research is to identify firm-specific variables that have significant influence on the capital structure of the analyzed companies. Using a panel data methodology, three leverage models were estimated: long-term leverage, short-term leverage, and total leverage. The research results confirm the importance of company size, profitability, tangibility, and risk in determining the capital structure of companies in the Republic of Serbia. However, the research results show that size, profitability, and tangibility of assets have the opposite effect on long-term leverage compared to short-term and total leverage. That is, the behavior of companies in the Republic of Serbia in the case of long-term leverage is in accordance with the predictions of the trade-off theory, while in the case of short-term and total leverage, the behavior of companies can be explained by the pecking order theory. The article explores the determinants of Romanian in-service teachers’ willingness to participate in a national training program focused on mentoring in education. A multidimensional analytical model and survey data collected from a large sample of Romanian teachers (N > 5000) revealed a specific profile of those teachers who are interested in joining this type of training in education. It is found that individuals’ interest in joining the training program is positively affected by a higher level of education, prior experiences of attending training programs, and higher awareness of the role of mentoring in education. At the same time, individuals’ self-assessed needs for training and more challenges faced in online/blended teaching during the pandemic period also increase the teachers’ chances to be interested in joining the training program. However, a negative relationship is found between age and the willingness to enroll in the training program. Based on these general findings, the article advances the comparisons between three subsamples of teachers depending on their teaching level (primary education, lower-secondary education, and upper-secondary education). The study is designed to contribute to the general debate on reforming education systems through mentoring in education, and its findings can inform policymakers and stakeholders in the field. This paper deals with the issue of education during the COVID-19 pandemic in Serbia and Bosnia and Herzegovina and its effects on education development gained during that process. This topic is trending around sustainable education in urban and rural areas also including widespread areas and locations of students and faculties. In this paper, we present a model that was created in the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic and is functional even today. The model is supported on a website and it became a foundation for adding a great deal of material and solutions for more prosperous results in education on several faculties. The key findings imply that in the initial stages of the COVID-19 pandemic with the system establishment of lectures and examinations, the level of adopted skills improved significantly and exceeded those before the COVID-19 pandemic regarding the passing of exams and average grades on subjects. The ANN model was developed, which provides results in terms of successfully passing knowledge tests and average grades by subjects. The innovativeness of the model is a combination of input and output parameters supporting the possibility of its wide application in various branches of science, which resulted in intense application of this model in numerous courses.
