Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Tourism, in general and hospitality as a specific part is an industry that has nowadays high potential to create paradigm changes in a sustainable manner. Contemporary sustainable development, globalization and the development of knowledge economies are redesigning into a global e-industry.

As sustainable hospitality development remains stationary, critical review and changes of the challenges for sustainable hospitality industry are needed in respect with the systemic framework of contemporary economic behavior and an increasingly intensive energy and resource demand.

In this global context, new paradigms must be developed in order to have a sustainable entrepreneurship in hospitality, meaning to search for opportunities for new services, new technologies or processes that facilitate social or environmental conditions, make more efficient use of energy and natural resources and less harmful to society.

This Special Issue will consist of selected papers from the Entrepreneurship in the Hospitality Industry International Conference (4th edition) on Sustainable Hospitality, held in Cluj-Napoca, Romania, during October 14-15, 2016. The aim of the conference is to provide an opportunity for presenting, exchanging  information and discussing research outcomes and sharing experiences related to paradigm changes in contemporary sustainable hospitality among academics, researchers and practitioners, consultants, industry experts, PhD students and any other categories interested in hospitality and tourism development all over the world.

We encourage submission of articles debating implications of the growth paradigm in hospitality; Sustainable development of tourism; Entrepreneurial challenges in tourism; Innovation in tourism; Tourism networks; Entrepreneurial dimensions in tourism and economic growth; Creativity, Innovation and Entrepreneurship in tourism; Good practices in tourism governance, policy-making and management; Hospitality marketing and branding strategies; Hotel industry development and management; Quality service strategies for the hospitality industry; Restaurant and foodservice industry management; Green hospitality; Online and Mobile tourism.

In this study, we developed a theoretical framework in which corporate social responsibility, corporate ability, customer trust and satisfaction, and corporate reputation by considering the influence of transparency as a moderator. The proposed hypotheses were empirically tested using data collected from 487 U.S. consumers via structural equation modeling. The results indicated that perceived corporate social responsibility and corporate ability significantly affected overall customer satisfaction and trust. In turn, customer trust and satisfaction have positive effects on perceptions about corporate reputation. Lastly, this study found that transparency as a significant moderator. This research will contribute to the development of a robust and comprehensive theoretical model that integrates existing frameworks and concepts within the hotel industry. Full article

Tourism, through its components, can be found in all areas that relate to sustainable development principles. Although it should be encouraged due to the multiplier effect that it has in the development of a region, it creates pressure on the surrounding environment like any other economic activity in the process of specific potential capitalization. This paper is aimed at determining the degree of tourism pressure, its trend and impact on tourism’s sustainable development and the Romanian economy. When this pressure exceeds the ecological support capacity, negative effects occur, both on the landscape in general, and on certain tourist objectives, in particular. The assessment of this pressure and its most accurate quantification imply the use, calculation, correlation and interpolation of indicators that may summarize certain aspects related to the density of tourist fittings, tourist traffic intensity and capitalization level. Hence, the approach would be considered regionally and in terms of tourism pressure dynamics, depending on the structure of available statistical data, as well as to get a clearer picture. The authors used methods specific to geography, as well as statistical and econometric methods. The interdependence between tourism, tourism pressure and sustainability is described in the Central region. The results and observations determined with reference to the factors and indicators shown underlie the coordination of the tourism activity in the other regions according to the processes of sustainability and tourism pressure mitigation. In this paper we propose to highlight the tourism evolution and its intensity in the North-East region of Romania, compared to two regions with similar touristic potential from the Eastern European Union: Subcarpathia from Poland and Central Slovakia. We analysed if the EU attachment of Romania, Poland, and Slovakia had some effects on tourism development in the three regions mentioned. Issues arising from the analysis of the current situation of tourism will allow us to draw some sustainable development directions of tourism in the North-East region based on conserving and capitalizing the uniqueness of the area. We will consider the experience of the other two regions, trying to adapt them to the situation of the North-East region. Based on the analysis we have made, we consider that other countries can inspire us by authorities’ initiatives in supporting tourism, good human resources training, entrepreneurship stimulation, and assistance in accessing financial resources, including EU ones. Cultural events and festivals can have a significant and important influence on the development of local communities. Their utilization of the endogenous resources of an area means that these events, most often, have a positive impact on the local economy. Quite consequentially, they may also extend the socio-cultural opportunities of local citizens. However, their utilization of time and space does raise concerns regarding environmental impact. Therefore, it is imperative that stakeholders study their net impact on a region. This present paper examines the economic, socio-cultural, and environmental impact of the Transilvania International Film Festival (TIFF). With a history of 15 editions, the festival gathers, year by year, an increasing number of people in Cluj-Napoca. The growth of the event has had unmistakable and important effects on the city. The purpose of the paper is to analyze resident participants’ perceptions on economic, socio-cultural, and environmental effects. To reach this goal, an exploratory and descriptive research was conducted. Both primary and secondary data were used in the analysis, the questionnaire being the main tool used for collecting data about participants’ perceptions. The results emphasize the positive effects at the socio-cultural level. The festival provides multiple possibilities to spend free time in a pleasant way, it sustains the development of cultural life, and it improves the educational and the cultural level of community. Moreover, the festival does not influence, in a negative manner, the moral principles of the society and it does not generate an increase in crime rate. From the economic point of view, the festival has the capacity to attract investments and additional revenues for the local government, it sustains the development of the city infrastructure, and it creates opportunities for residents to develop new economic activities. Lastly, from the environmental point of view, the festival sustains the improvement of environmental issues, it does not generate important traffic problems, and it does not deteriorate touristic resources.
