Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Waste bioremediation is a topic of serious concern, as it plays a pivotal role in mitigating the escalating challenges posed by waste and wastewater. Biological treatment processes represent a crucial tool in the biodegradation of organic matter, the transformation of toxic elements into harmless products, and the removal of microbes. This Special Issue focuses on original research and reviews regarding sustainable and eco-friendly solutions, investigating the application of biological agents and processes to eliminate contaminants and underscoring the importance of microbial strain selection, environmental condition optimization, and the development of novel bioprocesses. This involves the integration of bioprocessing with conventional treatment methods to maximize efficacy and minimize environmental impacts. This Special Issue is interested in original research highlighting the feasibility of a circular economy through a variety of methods for organic waste reduction, energy production and nutrient recovery; this will create new value from organic waste and end the cycle of resource use and waste generation. In summary, this scientific exploration will offer a comprehensive overview of the latest advancements in bioremediation and bioprocessing technologies, and will provide valuable insights for researchers, engineers, and policymakers working towards sustainable solutions for waste and wastewater treatment; this will facilitate ongoing efforts aiming to enhance environmental preservation and improve public health. In this framework, studies relating to the sustainable reuse of organic waste, biomass recycling and valorization, and bioremediation and bioprocess for waste and wastewater are encouraged and welcomed.

We look forward to receiving your contributions.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Sustainability is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2400 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
