Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

We invite submissions to this Sustainability Special Issue concerning “Advances in Renewable Energy Production and Storage”.

The decarbonisation objectives set by the European Commission inherently involve the use of renewable energies, and improvements in renewable energy production and storage will be key to its extensive use. Different forms of energy storage will be essential in reducing the variation in electricity prices, reducing the cost of electricity and facilitating the integration of renewable energy sources into the electricity grid, ensuring a stable future supply.

Advances in renewable energy production can be generated throughout the whole chain, i.e., production, management, control and/or storage. Additionally, the energy can be stored using different technologies or systems, for example, using mechanical, chemical, electrochemical, thermal and electrical systems.

This Special Issue of Sustainability aims to address advances in the field of renewable energy and/or storage.

This Special Issue welcomes original proposals focusing on improvements in the use of different types of renewable energies as well as different storage methods, including, among other things, the following topics:

  • Improvements in renewable energy production.
  • Modelling and control techniques on renewable energy sources and storage.
  • Power electronic converters for renewable energy sources and storage.
  • Electric generator control.
  • Quality of injecting renewable energy into the grid.
  • Storage systems.
  • Safety issues on storage systems.
  • Electric vehicles as energy storage systems and applications.
  • Application of stored energy supporting grid quality.

Proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs) play a crucial role in clean energy systems. Effective control of these systems is essential to optimize their performance. However, conventional control methods exhibit limitations in handling disturbances and ensuring robust control. To address these challenges, this paper presents a novel PI sliding mode controller-based super-twisting algorithm (PISMCSTA). The proposed controller is applied to drive the DC/DC boost converter in order to improve the PEMFC output power quality. In addition, the black widow optimization algorithm (BWOA) has been chosen to enhance and tune the PISMCSTA parameters according to the disturbance changes. The performance of the PISMCSTA is compared with the conventional STA controller. Comparative results are obtained from numerical simulations and these results show that the developed proposed PISMCSTA gives better results when compared to the conventional STA. A reduction of up to 8.7% in the response time could be achieved and up to 66% of the chattering effect could be eliminated by using the proposed controller. Finally, according to these results, the proposed approach can offer an improvement in energy consumption. Full article

The work presented in this paper aims to analyze the efficiency of using optimum tilt angles defined for several time intervals to maximize the incident solar irradiation on a certain surface deployed in Europe. Such a technique would improve the solar energy harvesting process, both for photovoltaic panels and solar thermal collectors, while not investing in the more expensive sun-tracking devices. The optimum tilt angles have been determined for the yearly, bi-annual, seasonal, and monthly time intervals, which were delimited on a calendar and astronomical base, respectively, considering multiple locations from Europe, and using various mathematical models based on empirical equations and solar irradiation estimation. The total incident solar irradiation provided by adjusting the tilt angle multiple times per year was calculated and compared to that obtained when using the yearly optimum tilt angle. The gains for each type of adjustment were investigated, and the monthly optimization of the tilt angle is obviously the most effective one, ensuring gains of up to 7%, depending on the considered latitude. Otherwise, an optimization twice per year, using the bi-annual optimum tilt angles determined for the astronomical-defined warm and cold seasons, would be the next best solution. Full article

In this paper, a generalized predictive control scheme for wind energy conversion systems that consists of a wind turbine and a doubly-fed induction generator is proposed. The design is created by using the maximum power point tracking theory to maximize the extracted wind power, even when the turbine is uncertain or the wind speed varies abruptly. The suggested controller guarantees compliance with current constraints by applying them in the regulator’s conceptual design process to assure that the rotor windings are not damaged due to the over-current. This GPC speed control solves the optimization problem based on the truncated Newton minimization method. Finally, simulation results, which are obtained through the Matlab/Simulink software, show the effectiveness of the proposed speed regulator compared to the widely used Proportional-integral controller for DFIG. The ongoing energy transition has caused a paradigm shift in the architecture of power systems, increasing their sustainability with the installation of renewable energy sources (RES). In most cases, the efficient utilization of renewable energy requires the employment of energy storage systems (ESSs), such as batteries and hydro-pumped storage systems. The need for ESS becomes more apparent when it comes to non-interconnected power systems, where the incorporation of stochastic renewables, such as photovoltaics (PV) systems, may more frequently reduce certain power quality indicators or lead to curtailments. The purpose of this review paper is to present the predominant core technologies related to ESSs, along with their technical and life cycle analysis and the range of ancillary services that they can provide to non-interconnected power systems. Also, it aims to provide a detailed description of existing installations, or combinations of installations, in non-interconnected European islands. Therefore, it provides an overview and maps the current status of storage solutions that enhance the sustainable environmentally friendly operation of autonomous systems. Full article
