Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Today, manufacturing processes and supply chains are undergoing a major transformation. Indeed, requirements and opportunities are changing as a result of an increasingly dynamic market environment. On the customer side, there is a growing expectation to meet specific needs at low cost and/or high service levels. Conversely, companies are facing increasing supply uncertainty and increasingly complex processes, which are promoting further opportunities for optimization. The digital solutions in “Sustainability/Sustainable development” (e.g., Big Data, Artificial Intelligence, Digital Twin, etc.), which are characteristic of the 4th Industrial Revolution, are a key issue for the development of competitive business operations. The correct application of these techniques reduces logistical losses, which affect the number of resources used and thus the sustainable operation of the system. The research and implementation of these solutions is a promising emerging field, and is being addressed by an increasing number of researchers.

The aim of this Special Issue, entitled “Smart Manufacturing and Supply Chain Management in Industry 4.0”, is to present innovative methods and processes in manufacturing and supply chains that contribute to the more efficient operation of these areas.

In this Special Issue, original research articles and reviews are welcome. Research areas may include (but are not limited to) the following:

  • sustainable supply chain management;
  • closed-loop supply chain;
  • digital twin;
  • artificial intelligence;
  • manufacturing systems;
  • decision support systems;
  • optimization methods;
  • intelligent forecasting;
  • simulation solutions;
  • packaging management systems;
  • big data;
  • recycling logistics;
  • cyber-physical system;
  • circular economy;
  • process development methods.

I look forward to receiving your contributions.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Sustainability is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2400 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
