Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

A high quality of life is something that many cities aspire to provide. Air quality, transportation infrastructure, and the level of recreation in public areas are a few factors that affect the quality of life. There are numerous potential methods to improve these aspects because of digitization. Additionally, digital transformation aids in addressing issues such as climate change that have an impact on society as a whole. How can cities become more digitally advanced and smarter? Which novel ideas and approaches could boost the effectiveness of crucial facilities, services, and utilities to build a city environment that is sustainable and offers its residents a high standard of living? For technological reasons and because suspicious inhabitants need to be persuaded of the value of new digital solutions, turning a city into a smart city is frequently a gradual process rather than a big bang change. This Special Issue seeks original research and review articles that discuss how communities might handle intricate, interrelated socio-environmental problems. In light of recent technological advancements in IoT-based solutions, this Special Issue aims to highlight the major interconnected challenges in areas such as the environment, climate change, mining, energy, agro-economics, water, and forestry that are impeding the development of a sustainable and resilient society.

In this Special Issue, original research articles and reviews are welcome. Research areas may include (but are not limited to) the following:

  • Sustainable IoT for a sustainable society;
  • Environmental issues in IoT-based solutions;
  • Internet of Everything for sustainable and smart cities;
  • Security, privacy, and trust models for sustainable internet of things;
  • 5G-empowered IoT solutions for sustainable development;
  • Artificial Intelligence solutions for IoT-based smart and sustainable cities;
  • Performance, scalability, reliability, and efficiency of IoT-based sustainable society solutions;
  • Testbeds and validation.

This paper explores how to improve the sustainability of smart cities from a design perspective, by combining concepts of sustainable design with the Internet of Things and ecosystems. The paper uses a combination of the literature, cases, and model building to develop the research. First, the article analyzes six elements (human, environment, society, economy, and culture) and four dimensions (space, resources, management, and platform) that constitute a sustainable design system for smart cities and constructs a system model based on this analysis; then, the strategy for sustainable design in smart cities is discussed from the perspectives of management and spatial planning by combining CIM and specific cases. The study highlights the importance of prioritizing people and balancing the “people-environment-society-economy-culture” system using technology across the dimensions of management, space, resources, and platform. Moreover, based on the CIM platform, the sustainable design of smart cities can be considered in terms of urban management and spatial planning, enabling people, environment, society, economy, culture, space, resources, and platform to form a smart ecological system and enhance the sustainability of smart cities.
