Trends of Industry 5.0: Smart Systems, Sustainable Production and Lean Thinking Applications

Dear Colleagues,

Nowadays, society faces challenging times with the exacerbation of climate change, a global pandemic, wars and overwhelming technological improvements, which can sometimes feel like living in a whirlwind where many people struggle to keep up with such technological advances. Some initiatives and practices have been launched in various industries for immensurable economic, social and sustainability benefits.

Industry 4.0 brings ambitious changes to our whole society, and Industry 5.0 complements its “human-centric” and “efficiently intelligent” aspects and aims for more sustainable development. This Special Issue intends to promote discussion among researchers and engineers; share their thoughts, concepts and applications in this field; and submit their results to this collection, which covers aspects related to the trends of Industry 5.0, including, but not limited to:

• Lean thinking applications—

Lean thinking is a fundamental mindset that arose from the Toyota company during World War II under the name ‘Toyota Production System’. Contextualized by an environment of scarce resources and the low spirits of a society plagued by the consequences of war, this mindset allowed for transformational changes that helped recuperate losses from the war.

We are calling for submissions that report on case studies, action research, industry projects and literature reviews revealing the benefits of lean thinking principles and their integration in industry. Lean thinking studies aligned with Industry 5.0 concepts that focus on various aspects of this topic are welcome, including but not limited to lean and building information modeling (BIM), automotive applications, aerospace, industry, healthcare, supply chains, services, manufacturing, architecture and

• Reduce waste—maintain sustainability goals, improve the processes and production system and try our best to reduce the waste generated during manufacturing;
• Discussion between Industry 4.0 and Industry 5.0;
• Smart manufacturing systems and smart factories, virtual factories, the Internet of Things;
• Logistics, transportation and supply chain management;
• New technologies and innovative digital technologies in Industry 5.0—digital twins, big data, machine learning, artificial intelligence, blockchain.

In this context, the editors of this Special Issue are calling for submissions that report on case studies, action research, industry projects and literature reviews revealing the benefits of lean thinking principles and their integration in society.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process.
