Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

The IMO’s Revised GHG Strategy, adopted at MEPC 80 in July 2023 (IMO, 2023), represents a major leap forward in ambition and closely aligns with the 1.5 °C temperature goal. The strategy sends an unequivocal signal to all maritime sector stakeholders that ships being ordered today, and many that have already been built, must be capable of running on zero-emission fuels. The strategy sets the pace of action required by non-state actors and national action before international measures to reduce GHG emissions take effect by the end of this decade. The goal of this Special Issue is to bring together the latest research on actions that enable the achievement of these goals and the decarbonization of the shipping sector. Authors are invited to contribute original work from a range of disciplines (economics, law, finance, engineering, etc.), which could include assessments of zero-emission fuels; energy efficiency measures; policy instruments; impacts on states, including challenges/opportunities for developing countries; just and equitable transition approaches; national and regional actions, including green shipping corridors; non-state/corporate actions, including sustainable finance; port-level actions; and demand.
