Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

The building sector represents a critical element within the global energy landscape. As a major energy consumer and source of energy-related carbon emissions, the building sector holds immense potential to assist in energy transitions and to contribute to global climate-change-mitigation efforts. The key to unlocking this potential lies in the evolution of buildings toward greater energy-efficiency and achieving net-zero carbon emissions. With rapid advancements in computing, artificial intelligence (AI), and digital technologies, a new horizon of possibilities is emerging. These technologies are revolutionising the way buildings are designed, constructed, and operated, striving for energy efficiency and zero carbon emissions.

This Special Issue is dedicated to showcasing cutting-edge research and innovative solutions in building sustainability. It aims to highlight advancements that can enhance buildings’ energy efficiency and reduce carbon emissions, thereby contributing to global efforts in sustainable development. We invite original research articles and reviews that explore various aspects of this dynamic field. The scope of this Special Issue encompasses a wide array of topics, including, but not limited to, the following:

  • Intelligent Building Operational Control Solutions.
  • Energy-Efficient and Sustainable Building-Design Solutions.
  • Sustainable Materials and Construction Methods.
  • Energy-Efficient HVAC and Lighting Systems.
  • Renewable Energy Sources for Buildings.
  • Energy Storage Solutions for Buildings.
  • Building Energy Modelling and Evaluations.
  • Solutions for Thermal Comfort and Indoor Air Quality (IAQ).
  • Building Integration with Smart Grids and Electric Vehicles (EVs).

I look forward to receiving your contributions.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Sustainability is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2400 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
