Third World Science and Wine Congress

The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development aim to complement policy with scientific knowledge and orient government strategies toward a new development paradigm that improves the well-being of future generations, while ensuring the sustainable management of the planet’s natural resources. All this is even more important if viewed in the context of food systems, whose sustainability is paramount for sustainable development. Food sustainability for humans involves the ability, sustained over time, to produce or procure enough food to meet an individual’s or a population’s nutritional requirements, using production, distribution, and disposal systems that have a neutral or beneficial impact on the environment and ecosystems, and that ideally are underpinned by forms of social justice that can ensure equitable access to food. In this congress, we plan to discuss the importance of clarifying the meaning of being sustainable, as well as highlighting the complexity of the interactions and interrelationships between different variables, including the following:

  • The ecosystem within which wine/food is produced and the relevance of climate and climate change, air purity, sufficient water, water purity, the productivity of the soil, and appropriate recycling of waste materials.
  • Biodiversity as the variable to must be sustained, either in one place, in a region, or globally.
  • The human activities needed to produce wine/food.
  • How food production, distribution, preparation, consumption, and disposal can be sustained for future generations in the face of challenges such as population growth, climate, and environmental change, conflict, and deepening social and geographical inequalities.

In all cases, the interaction of factors adds complexity, which is why we stress the importance of not just multidisciplinary perspectives, but also the communication between incomplete disciplines through a cross-disciplinary approach.

It is against the backdrop of the urgent issues concerning global food sustainability that we decided to promote the 3rd World Science and Wine Congress under the topic “Sustainability of wine production and food systems in the Mediterranean region”. The Congress will take place in Porto/ Douro Region (Quinta do Ventozelo) from 14 to 16 June 2023.

The aim is to provide a scientific discussion of the challenges, constraints, and solutions necessary to maintain a healthy and accessible food supply in different communities around the world. We will address a wide range of issues related to the principles and practices of food security and sustainability, learning from the experience of the past, and exploring the global challenges of the new millennium to meet human nutritional requirements. This congress aims to discuss recent achievements in food systems and sustainability through the cooperation of many researchers in the fields of agricultural production with those working in food technology, nutrition, medicine, and public health.

The scientific program will be divided into the following four sections:

  1. Sustainable Viticulture and Winemaking Practices (Scientific Committee: Régis Gougeon, Cristina Carlos, Jorge Queiroz).
  2. Sustainable Food Systems and the Mediterranean Diet (Scientific Committee: Riccardo Valentini, Carlos Ribeiro, Ruth Pereira).
  3. Sustainable Wine Tourism and Mediterranean Gastronomy (Scientific Committee: Elisabeth Kastenholz, Alexandre Guedes, Amélia Brandão).
  4. Sustainable Mediterranean Diet: the Interaction between the Food Industry and Tourism, Nutrition, Health, and the Environment (Scientific Committee: Dominique Delmas, Ana Barros, Paula Silva).

The partners of this congress are University of Porto (UPorto), the University of Trás-os-Montes (UTAD), Vine and Wine Institute, I.P. (IVV), Association of Port Wine Companies (AEVP), Association of Wines and Spirits of Portugal (ACIBEV) and The Porto Protocol Foundation.

You can follow the conference on the conference webpage, where it is also possible to register for the conference.

We are looking forward to welcoming you to Porto.
