Dear Colleagues,
The development of more efficient and cheaper technologies for visual sensing has supported the maturation of the wireless sensor networks field, with the opening of new possibilities for distributed camera-based monitoring applications. Such maturation is taking place amid the evolving internet of things landscape, bringing visual sensing to heterogeneous applications in scenarios such as smart cities, industry 4.0, intelligent healthcare, and vehicular networks. This wealth context keeps pushing for new innovations and performance enhancements for visual sensor networks (VSN), fostering new developments in this area.
When considering the research initiatives related to distributed visual sensing and wireless networking, many challenges are yet to be properly addressed. Concerning architecture and communication protocols, issues such as routing, real-time data delivery, reliability, availability, security, and network engineering are some of the topics that have driven relevant research efforts and that still present open challenges. On the other hand, applications of visual sensor networks in different scopes have also faced relevant challenges that demand proper attention.
In this Special Issue, innovative research papers addressing relevant research challenges in the development and applicability of visual sensor networks are particularly sought. New algorithms and protocols, communication architectures, sensing frameworks, coding strategies, and different types of innovative visual sensing applications can bring relevant contributions to the area and thus deserve as much attention as possible. These and other contributions related to visual sensor networks are then the targets of this Special Issue.
