Dear Colleagues,
Nowadays, digital health can be exercised by anyone owning a smartphone, and parameters such as heart rate, step counts, calorie intake, and sleep quality can be collected and used not only to monitor and improve citizens’ health conditions, but also to prevent illnesses. The everyday use of IoT-enabled devices and wearables, uniquely identified and equipped with embedded sensors, unveils a world of possibilities for the development of healthcare and wellbeing applications. Although some open platforms address the integration of devices and services delivering intelligent solutions, several challenges still need to be overcome, in particular the extraction of useful and actionable health-related information from the large volume of data, and how this information can be made interoperable with existing systems and stakeholders.
This Special Issue aims to explore the application of state-of-the-art technologies from the IoT and the Internet of Medical Things (IoMT), including data collection, data cleaning and harmonization, big data analytics, and interoperability between health platforms. Of special interest is research work that explores the combining of mobile and wearable sensors with electronic health records in an interoperable ecosystem of citizens, patients, caregivers and medical staff for continuous behavioral and physiological monitoring at home and in the community, enabling a range of interventions, including in nutrition and physical activity, the adaptation of work and the workplace, and better equality of access to health and care services.
