Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Wireless sensor network (WSN) comprises of a wireless network of tiny devices that are equipped with sensors to monitor physical and environmental conditions. Such devices could interact with different actuators such as servos, motors, drone and form a wireless sensor and actuator network (WSAN). WSANs could be used to collect info from the region of interest (i.e. environment, building structures, farms, human body, etc) and autonomously control the required aspects of the target.

WSANs are considered as one of the main building blocks of Internet of Things (IoT) and Industry 4.0 to create smart environments, cities, healthcare, etc.  However, there are several challenges that need to be tackled to effectively deploy the WSANs and provide reliable services such as dynamic and intelligent management of the sensors and actuators, resource constraint nature of the network nodes, seamless, robust and secure communication between the devices.

This special issue aims to bring together scholars to discuss and present their latest research and findings on all the aspects of WSANs.

Topics of primary interest include but are not limited to:

  • Power management and energy harvesting in WSANs
  • Cloud/mobile edge/fog computing in WSANs
  • Image processing and computer vision
  • Security and privacy in WSANs
  • Medium access control protocols
  • Communication architectures for WSANs
  • Cooperative and bio-inspired algorithms for WSANs
  • Machine learning and deep learning techniques
  • Localization and positioning
  • Novel applications of WSANs

In a wireless sensor network (WSN), geocasting is a location-based routing protocol used for data collection or information delivery. In geocasting, a target region usually contains many sensor nodes with limited battery capacity, and sensor nodes in multiple target regions need to transmit data to the sink. Therefore, how to use location information to construct an energy efficient geocasting path is a very important issue. FERMA is a geocasting scheme for WSNs based on Fermat points. In this paper, an efficient grid-based geocasting scheme for WSNs, which is called GB-FERMA, is proposed. The scheme uses the Fermat point theorem to search for the specific nodes as Fermat points in a grid-based WSN, and it selects the optimal relay nodes (gateways) in the grid structure to realize energy-aware forwarding. In the simulations, when the initial power 0.25 J, the average energy consumption of GB-FERMA is about 53% of FERMA-QL, 37% of FERMA, and 23% of GEAR; however, when with the initial power 0.5 J, the average energy consumption of GB-FERMA is about 77% of FERMA-QL, 65% of FERMA, and 43% of GEAR. The proposed GB-FERMA can effectively reduce the energy consumption and thus prolong the lifetime of the WSN. Full article

As the technology of Internet of Things (IoT) becomes popular, the number of sensor nodes also increases. The network coverage, extensibility, and reliability are also the key points of technical development. To address the challenge of environmental restriction and deployment cost, most sensor nodes are powered by batteries. Therefore, the low-power consumption becomes an important issue because of the finite value of battery capacity. In addition, significant interference occurs in the environment, thereby complicating reliable wireless communication. This study proposes a fuzzy-based adaptive data rate for the transmission power control in wireless sensor networks to balance the communication quality and power consumption. The error count and error interval perform the inputs of a fuzzy system and the corresponding fuzzy system output is guard that is utilized for limiting the upper bounds of data rate and transmission power. The long-term experimental results are introduced to demonstrate that the control algorithm can overcome environmental interference and obtain low-power performance. The sensor nodes have reliable communication under an ultra-low-power consumption. The experimental results show that the total power consumption of the proposed approach has been improved 73% compared with the system without executing the algorithm and also indicate the Packet Error Rate (PER) is close to 1%. Therefore, the proposed method is suitable for the battery supply IoT system. Full article
