Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

The 8th International Conference on Green and Human Information Technology ( ICGHIT 2020) (http://icghit.org/) will take place in Hanoi, Vietnam on 5–7 February 2020 under the auspices of LeQuyDony Technical University.

The 8th International Conference on Green and Human Information Technology is a unique global conference for researchers, industry professionals, and academics who are interested in the latest development of green and human information technology. This year’s conference theme is “Creative and Hyper X Learning Technology”. There are more specific areas about sensors in this conference. Attention is paid but not limited to ad-hoc and sensor networks, sustainable sensor networks, information-centric sensor networks, blockchain-based secure sensor networks, AI-based self-evolving sensor networks, system on chip (SoC), and sensor/RFID circuit design.

Authors of the selected papers related to Sensors from the conference are invited to submit the extended versions of their original papers.

Dr. Byung-Seo Kim
Guest Editor

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Sensors is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2600 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.

Partial discharge (PD) is a major indicator of various failures in power grid systems. PD exhibits a physical occurrence where a localized electrical discharge happens in insulation materials. This phenomenon causes damage to the insulating parts and, in various circumstances, leads to complete insulation breakdown. As a consequence, it can produce more costly outcomes such as abrupt outages or lost production. Therefore, PD detection plays a vital role in preventing insulation failure. In this work, we propose a system that utilizes heterogeneous sensors for the PD detection along with multi-sensor interface, real-time advanced denoise processing, flexible system operation, and Bluetooth-low-energy (BLE)-based ad hoc communication. Among the variety of heterogeneous sensors, several are developed by the application of nanomaterials and nanotechnology, thus outperforming the regular types. The proposed system successfully identifies the presence of PD from sensor signals using a microprocessor-based processing system and effectively performs an advanced denoising technique based on the wavelet transform through field-programmable-gate-array (FPGA)-based programmable logics. With the development of the system, we aim to achieve a solution with low cost, high flexibility and efficiency, and ease of deployment for the monitoring of power grid systems. Full article

The participating nodes in Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) are usually resource-constrained in terms of energy consumption, storage capacity, computational capability, and communication range. Energy is one of the major constraints which requires an efficient mechanism that takes into account the energy consumption of nodes to prolong the network lifetime. Particularly in the large scale heterogeneous WSNs, this challenge becomes more critical due to high data collection rate and increased number of transmissions. To this end, clustering is one of the most popular mechanisms which is being used to minimize the energy consumption of nodes and prolong the lifetime of the network. In this paper, therefore, we propose a robust clustering mechanism for energy optimization in heterogeneous WSNs. In the proposed scheme, nodes declare themselves as cluster head (CH) based on available resources such as residual energy, available storage and computational capability. The proposed scheme employs the multi criteria decision making technique named as Technique for Order of Preference by Similarity to Ideal Solution (TOPSIS) which allows the child nodes to select the optimal CH among several potential CH candidates. Moreover, we also propose mechanisms such as CH-acquaintanceship and CH-friendship in order to prolong the network lifetime. Simulation results show that our proposed scheme minimizes the control overhead, reduces the power consumption and enhances overall lifetime of the network by comparing with the most recent and relevant proposed protocol for WSNs.
