Dear Colleagues,

This Special Issue, titled  "Next Generation of Sub-nanosecond Synchronization and Wireless Communication and Sensors", aims to showcase the latest developments and advancements in the fields of wireless communication, sensor technology, and synchronization techniques. This Special Issue will cover a wide range of topics related to these areas, from cutting-edge protocols to practical applications of the latest breakthroughs. Here are the key areas that the Special Issue will focus on:

  • Wireless communication: this section will encompass all aspects of wireless communication, including but not limited to:
    • Short-range wireless communication: technologies like Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, Zigbee, and new protocols, enabling communication within a range of a few meters.
    • Medium-range wireless communication: cellular networks, wireless LANs (Local Area Networks), and other technologies that operate over several hundred meters to a few kilometers.
    • Long-range wireless communication: covering technologies that facilitate communication over thousands of kilometers, such as satellite communication and long-range radio systems.
  • Sensor Technology: this section will explore the advancements in sensor development and deployment, including:
    • Wireless sensors: sensors equipped with wireless communication capabilities, enabling them to communicate data without the need for physical connections.
    • Sensor networks: the use of multiple sensors working together in a coordinated manner to collect and transmit data efficiently.
    • Energy-efficient sensors: research on sensors designed to optimize power consumption and prolong battery life.
  • Sub-nanosecond synchronization: This segment will focus on achieving precise synchronization at the sub-nanosecond level, ensuring accurate timing and coordination in various systems. Topics may include:
    • Wireless synchronization techniques: methods to achieve precise synchronization between wireless devices.
    • Wired synchronization methods: synchronization achieved through wired connections, including optical fiber-based solutions.
    • Synchronization protocols and algorithms: developments in protocols and algorithms for achieving sub-nanosecond synchronization.
  • Applications: this section will highlight practical applications and use cases of the latest developments in wireless communication, sensors, and sub-nanosecond synchronization; topics may include:
    • Industry 4.0 and the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT): Applications of these technologies in industrial settings for process optimization and automation.
    • Smart cities and urban sensing: using wireless communication and sensor networks to enhance urban infrastructure and services.
    • Telecommunications and long-range communication applications: novel applications of long-range wireless communication technologies.
    • Synchronization in scientific research: applications in fields like astronomy and telecommunications, where precise timing is critical.

Overall, this Special Issue seeks to bring together cutting-edge research and practical applications from various disciplines related to wireless communication, sensor technology, and sub-nanosecond synchronization. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. Sensors is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
