Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

The interest of the research and industry communities in combining Internet of Things (IoT) technologies with artificial intelligence (AI) in the digital transformation process for the design and experimentation of innovative applications for smart environments in various domains is growing. In addition, IoT technologies such as embedded systems and enhanced sensors for wearable devices are becoming ever more prevalent in domains related to user wellbeing and the application of the so-called "One Health" approach that envisions a collaborative, multisectoral, and transdisciplinary effort to achieve optimal health outcomes. Different solutions have been proposed and adopted in both research and industrial domains to guarantee and support user wellbeing, and specifically to enhance users’ health conditions and safety.

In this Special Issue, we invite the submission of articles regarding the use of enabling technologies, methodologies, and applications for smart environments, particularly those focused on healthcare, safety, thermal comfort, smart buildings, and ageing services. Authors are encouraged to submit articles mainly describing original research, presenting results that advance the state of the art and fuel more efforts in the future. Review articles are also welcome.

Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:

  • Innovation for the healthcare domain;
  • Innovative systems for guaranteeing safety in every domain;
  • Home-based healthcare assistance applications;
  • Assistance applications for guaranteeing safety in any environment;
  • Pervasive AI techniques for healthcare or safety systems;
  • Distributed AI-based infrastructures for the exploitation of AI power at the edge;
  • Edge intelligence for healthcare and safety solutions;
  • Localization systems;
  • Distributed ledger technologies (DLTs) applied for enhancing the healthcare and safety domains;
  • Security and privacy applied in the healthcare domain.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Sensors is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2600 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
