Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Smart system development has undergone a paradigm shift as a result of the convergence of Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs), the Internet of Things (IoT), Artificial Intelligence (AI), and Edge Computing. Edge Intelligence, which is the combination of these cutting-edge technologies, enables real-time data processing, decision making, and enhanced connectivity at the network’s periphery. Edge Intelligence combines the capabilities of WSNs, IoT devices, AI algorithms, and Edge Computing architectures to produce highly efficient and intelligent systems. Edge Intelligence transcends the limitations of cloud-based solutions, including latency, bandwidth constraints, and privacy concerns, by conveying computation, data analytics, and AI algorithms closer to the data source. This convergence enables intelligent systems to react in real time, adapt to dynamic environments, and maximize resource utilization. The purpose of this Special Issue is to examine the most recent developments, challenges, and opportunities of Edge Intelligence in smart systems. This Special Issue strives to elucidate the transformative potential of Edge Intelligence in reshaping the computing and electrical engineering landscape by showcasing innovative research, novel methodologies, and real-world implementations. We seek to facilitate collaboration and knowledge exchange among researchers, engineers, and industry professionals working towards the realization of highly efficient, intelligent, and interconnected systems by highlighting the most recent developments and addressing critical challenges. The convergence of WSNs, the IoT, AI, and Edge Computing into Edge Intelligence has the potential to create a world that is wiser and more responsive, and the purpose of this Special Issue is to contribute to this vision.

This Special Issue invites researchers and practitioners to contribute original research articles, reviews, and case studies addressing the advancements and convergence of WSNs, the IoT, AI, and Edge Computing into Edge Intelligence for smart systems. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Edge Intelligence Architectures;
  • Real-time Analytics in Edge Intelligence;
  • Edge-based AI Inference;
  • Edge–Cloud Collaboration;

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Sensors is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2600 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
