Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Imaging spectroscopy is a progressive optical remote sensing domain that is increasingly contributing to interdisciplinary research addressing today’s key environmental and societal challenges. The imaging spectroscopy knowledge, traditionally based on airborne and limited space-borne sensors, is expanding towards new spatial and spectral perspectives with new ground-based, unmanned airborne and satellite systems. Several up-coming spaceborne imaging spectroscopy missions (e.g. PRISMA, EnMAP, CHIME, HISUI, etc.) will in a near future open up new opportunities for hyperspectral mapping and quantitative estimations of land and water surfaces. At the same time, new unmanned aircraft systems (UAS) and tower-based instruments are being developed for scaling the imaging spectroscopy signals from detailed to global spatial scales. Novel spectral signals, such as for instance solar-induced chlorophyll fluorescence, and also the fusion of imaging spectroscopy products with active LiDAR and radar remote sensing observations are being explored for advanced temporal monitoring of Earth system functions and spatial structures. Forward simulations and inversions of imaging spectroscopy data and products using physically-based radiative transfer models are becoming more effective and accurate thanks to advancements in machine learning algorithms for data classifications, regressions and emulations. All these technological and methodological developments are advancing our current understanding of the Earth’s natural and man-managed systems. This Special Issue will feature the state-of-the-art imaging spectroscopy research presented and discussed in February 2019 in Brno (Czech Republic) at the 11th Workshop of Special Interest Group on Imaging Spectroscopy of the European Association of Remote Sensing Laboratories (EARSeL).

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. Remote Sensing is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
