Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

It is our pleasure to announce the opening of a new Special Issue in Processes. This Special Issue invites papers on challenges, solutions and emerging trends in state-of-the-art embedded systems and their applications, with a focus on miniaturization, energy efficiency, resource optimization and intelligence. According to Allied Analytics, the global embedded systems market was valued at USD 89.1 billion in 2021, and is projected to reach USD 163.2 billion by 2031, growing at a CAGR of 6.5% from 2022 to 2031. Digital intelligence is extended beyond dedicated computer systems to IoT and edge devices, wearables as well as sensors; it is ubiquitous across a number of domains including Smart Cities, Smart Health, Robotics, Industry 4.0 and Transportation.

However, embedded systems are generally confined by a number of limited resources, including processing power and memory; at the same time, such systems often need to be powered by batteries or harvested energy to enable an increased autonomy. To meet the growing requirements of modern applications and realize the potential of smart, omnipresent integrated systems, the introduction and co-design of novel software and hardware architectures is necessary, together with their optimization in terms of system resources and power consumption, the introduction of miniaturized versions of embedded devices and components and the development of advanced sensing technology. For this Special Issue, authors are encouraged to submit their original research in any of the following or related areas:

  • Intelligent control systems
  • Embedded intelligence and machine learning
  • Software/hardware co-design and optimization
  • Energy efficient architecture design
  • Micro- and nano-systems
  • Run-time power optimization
  • Wireless communication and tracking
  • Optimization algorithms

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Processes is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2400 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
