Dear Colleagues,
Natural polymers have been widely isolated from animal waste or plants in nature, and they have been used in specific applications in the food, pharmaceutical, and cosmeceutical industries, as a result of their unique characteristics. Generally, natural polymers are classified as proteins (for instance, collagen, elastin, silk, gelatin, fibrinogen, elastin, keratin, actin, and myosin); polysaccharides (namely, hyaluronic acid, chitosan, alginate, galactan, carrageenan, starch, cellulose, gums, pectins, and dextran); or polynucleotides (such as DNA and RNA). Regardless of whether they are proteins or polysaccharides, small repeating units constitute their long-chain molecules. The present Special Issue addresses the bioactivity (e.g., intrinsic bioactivity or combination with bioactive materials/compounds), interactions (e.g., protein–polysaccharide or polysaccharide–polysaccharide interactions, crosslinking, and the synergistic relationship between natural and synthetic polymers), and applications (such as biomedical, biotechnological, agriculture, food, packaging, and pharmaceuticals) of biopolymers from various and different natural sources.
