Special Issue Information

The environmental aspects of sustainable development in the construction industry consist of the utilisation of secondary raw materials and materials which can be recycled in the design and construction of new structures. Geopolymer binders, which are produced by the reaction of solid aluminosilicate source materials such as fly ash, slag, and metakaolin with alkaline solutions, represent a new class of inorganic polymer material with great potential to become a more sustainable alternative to Portland cement-based binders. Geopolymer concrete has beneficial engineering properties such as reducing the potential for global warming, being a heat-resistant material, non-flammability, non-combustibility etc. This Special Issue deals with various aspects of geopolymer as a construction material, including the use of geopolymer profiles in civil infrastructures. The range of potential topics includes the material characterisation, microstructural characterisation, durability, and long-term performance of geopolymer concrete in civil engineering applications. Structural retrofitting and rehabilitation methods and the application of geopolymer and its profiles in civil infrastructures are also discussed. Additionally, this issue accepts state-of-the-art reviews on the industrial application of geopolymer concrete. The following topics are a selection of those welcomed in this issue:

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. Polymers is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
