Dear Colleagues,

In recent years, polymer-based nanofibers fabricated from natural/ synthetic or polymer blends have become an imperative group of materials attracting considerable attention, with outstanding features for many applications. A great interest has been shown towards the production of nanofibrous materials, due to their various and useful applications in biomedical and industrial fields.

In order to fulfil this demand, researchers have developed various techniques to produce polymer-based nanofibers, e.g., drawing techniques, self‐assembly, phase separation/inversion, template synthesis, solution blowing (air jet spinning), interfacial polymerization or electrospinning.

Among all these techniques, electrospinning is considered the most used process for the fabrication of ideal polymer nanofibers. Electrospinning is an economical, simple, and facile technique with a specific approach, using electrostatic forces to generate uniform nanofibers/nanobots from polymer solutions. Based on the research studies, the technique is suitable for the fabrication of continuous fibres with diameters varying between ∼3 nm and 6 μm, and reaching several meters in length. Electrospun nanofibers possess unique properties, including a large specific surface area per unit mass, which facilitates adding functionalities to the surface for specific applications, high porosity, superior mechanical performance, and a bio‐inspired architecture that resembles the natural extracellular matrix, which supports cell adhesion and proliferation.  

Polymer-based nanofibers can be used in many biomedical and industrial applications such as tissue regeneration, artificial organ components, antibacterial activity, drug delivery, antioxidant activity, implant materials, wound dressing, filters, protective clothing, sensors, reinforcement in composite materials, filters, fabric, energy, fuel cells, batteries, sensors, and others.

With this Special Issue, we hope to bring together the most recent research results in field of polymer-based nanofibers production through different approaches, and also a future perspective of biomedical and industrial applications.
