Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

We are pleased to invite you to contribute to this groundbreaking Special Issue on "Medical Cannabis: Controlled Release and Targeted Drug Delivery." We seeking original research articles, review papers and case studies that shed light on the latest advancements, challenges and future perspectives in the dynamic field of medical cannabis. The importance of research in controlled release and targeted drug delivery for medical cannabis cannot be overstated. As the clinical application of cannabis expands, there is a pressing need to develop delivery mechanisms that offer precise dosing, improved bioavailability and targeted action, thereby ensuring safe and effective treatment options for patients. This research area stands at the intersection of pharmaceutical sciences, medical research and patient care, embodying a multidisciplinary approach to solving one of the most pressing challenges in the field of medical cannabis.

This Special Issue aims to explore innovative research and developments in the field of medical cannabis, with a particular focus on overcoming the hurdles associated with cannabinoid delivery and efficacy. The objective is to bring together the latest advancements in controlled release systems and targeted delivery mechanisms that can significantly improve the therapeutic index of cannabinoids. Such systems are designed to ensure a consistent, controlled release of cannabinoids, enhancing their bioavailability and targeting specific physiological sites, thereby minimizing side effects and maximizing therapeutic benefits.

Contributions to this Special Issue cover a broad spectrum of research, including, but not limited to:

  • Novel formulations and delivery systems for cannabinoids, ensuring controlled release and targeted delivery;
  • Pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic studies of cannabis-based medicines, providing insights into their mechanisms of action, absorption, distribution, metabolism and excretion;
  • Clinical trials and case studies evaluating the efficacy and safety of controlled release and targeted delivery systems in various patient populations;
  • Technological advancements in nanotechnology, biotechnology and materials science that contribute to the development of innovative cannabinoid delivery platforms;
  • Ethical, regulatory and policy considerations in the research and use of medical cannabis, with an emphasis on ensuring patient access, safety and compliance.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Pharmaceutics is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2900 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
