Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Animal healthcare, particularly advanced drug delivery systems, is an area of growing importance that has often taken a backseat compared to the extensive research and development in human medicines. While the medical advancements in human pharmaceuticals have been substantial, their application to animals has been less intensively focused upon. Nonetheless, we can draw valuable lessons from human drug delivery systems and adapt them for animal use. However, animals have unique anatomical and physiological characteristics that require specialized knowledge and tailored approaches. Factors such as species variations, sizes, and varied responses to treatments make it necessary to have distinct considerations for animal health. Additionally, the dosage requirements for animals can be significantly different than that of humans, making cost and potential adverse effects a concern. Therefore, bridging this knowledge gap and tailoring medical technology specifically for animals becomes increasingly essential to ensure the health and well-being of our animal companions and livestock.

Drug delivery to animals can be challenging due to differences in physiology, leading to variable drug absorption and effectiveness. This Special Issue focuses on cutting-edged efforts in the development of innovative delivery strategies for existing therapeutics and potential drug candidates for the diagnosis and treatment of various diseases in animals. The lack of literature precedence in this specific field of advanced drug delivery to animals remains a primary obstacle in the development of veterinary products. As a result, this Special Issue also draws attention to the key characteristic of effective delivery approaches for animals and gathers up-to-day scientific knowledge on the application of human pharmaceuticals to veterinary products.

Specialized knowledge is indispensable in addressing these issues and developing effective drug delivery systems for animals.

For this Special Issue, original research articles and reviews are welcome. Research areas may include (but are not limited to) the following:

  • The intersection between human and veterinary medications: What do we really learn?
  • Compounded veterinary products: The influence of physiochemical characteristics of APIs and excipients;
  • Advanced oral and topical drug delivery systems for animals;
  • Long-acting injection for animals;
  • Advance drug delivery systems to overcome concerns in livestock;
  • Solving antibiotic resistance in animals through advanced drug delivery.

We look forward to receiving your contributions.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Pharmaceutics is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2900 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
