The field of pharmaceutical nanomaterials and nanotoxicology stands at the frontier of innovative research, bridging crucial gaps in medical and pharmaceutical applications through the development of novel nano-based platforms for diagnosis, treatment, and drug delivery. This area of study harnesses the unique properties of nanomaterials to create systems with enhanced selectivity, sensitivity, and performance over traditional approaches, potentially revolutionizing patient care by enabling the early detection of diseases, enhancing drug efficacy, and minimizing side effects.
Given the rapid expansion of nanotechnology into biomedical and pharmaceutical fields over the last two decades, the investigation of the safety and toxicity of nanomaterials has become a pivotal concern. Nanotoxicology, as an emerging discipline, evaluates the unintended hazardous effects of nanoparticles on human health and the environment, focusing on their interactions with biological components that may lead to adverse outcomes. This includes assessing cellular stress, cytotoxicity, and the broader implications of nanoformulations on pharmacokinetics and organ toxicity. The complexity of nanomaterial interactions necessitates the development of novel methods and approaches for the evaluation of safety, highlighting the criticality of understanding adverse outcome pathways (AOPs) and employing advanced molecular biology techniques for comprehensive risk assessment.
This Special Issue welcomes the submission of original research articles and reviews that contribute to the knowledge base in the field of pharmaceutical nanomaterials and nanotoxicology. We seek submissions that explore innovative nanomaterials for drug delivery systems, biosensors, gene and drug delivery, enzyme immobilization, and contrast agents for bio-imaging. Contributions may also focus on the application of nanotechnology in cancer diagnostics, treatment, and tissue engineering, as well as studies addressing the potential health and environmental risks associated with the biomedical and pharmaceutical application of nanomaterials. By compiling a collection of at least 10 articles, this Special Issue aims to foster a deeper understanding of the impact of nanomaterials on health and the environment, thus promoting the safe and effective application of nanotechnology in medicine and pharmacy.

All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process.
