Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

New types of membrane reactors have recently been proposed using different membrane processes with interesting potential practical applications. Pervaporation, membrane distillation, separation by membrane contactors, dialysis, and a few others are membrane processes where a pressure difference between the two sides of the membrane is not required, because it does not directly affect or only indirectly affects the driving force for the permeation. Even if they are less well-known and widespread than pressure-driven membrane processes (PDMPs) such as reverse osmosis, nanofiltration, ultrafiltration, and microfiltration, non-PDMPs present some features which may offer significant advantages in membrane reactors. These advantages include milder operating conditions (atmospheric pressure), which make the apparatus less expensive and the reaction coupling simpler and easier. More importantly, in some cases non-PDMPs give the unique possibility to selectively recover the products of the reaction directly during their formation. This opportunity is not viable with PDMPs, which typically permeate only purified water. Therefore, non-PDMPs can be used in membrane reactors to obtain important benefits in a different way. For instance, the recovery of valuable intermediate products avoids their further degradation, the subtraction of inhibiting products increases the rate of the reaction, and the removal of a product of a reversible reaction permits to shift the equilibrium towards the products. Process intensification—that is, “to produce much more and better, while consuming much less”—is the final result of such membrane reactors, which allow process efficiency to be increased and for sustainability to be improved. The present Special Issue of the journal Membranes on “Applications of Non-Pressure-Driven Membrane Processes in Membrane Reactors” seeks contributions to present the proposed utilizations of non-PDMPs in membrane reactors and the current state-of-the-art of the subject. A survey of the ongoing research, possible applications, and underlying mechanisms is also important because it can provide inspiration for new ideas and uses for this relatively novel and promising type of membrane reactor. Authors are invited to submit their results; both original papers and reviews are welcome.
