Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

The global challenge of wastewater and solid waste management has become increasingly pressing due to rapid urbanization, industrialization, and population growth. Conventional treatment approaches frequently prove inadequate in managing the intricate composition and volume of wastewater, thereby contributing to environmental contamination and public health risks. In this context, membrane-based technologies have emerged as promising solutions for the efficient treatment of wastewater and solid waste. Specially, membrane reactors, such as membrane bioreactors, reverse osmosis, ultrafiltration, membrane distillation, etc., have become efficient technologies for wastewater and organic solid waste treatment. They seem to be a promising choice as most solids can be completely eliminated through membrane separation. Furthermore, membrane reactors are generally associated with stable treatment performance and economic benefits. The circular economy is changing wastewater and solid waste management, with the aim of maximizing energy generation and resource recovery from wastewater.

The scope of this Special Issue, entitled “Advanced Membrane Technologies for Wastewater and Solid Waste Treatment”, involves numerous topics within the research field of membrane sciences. Authors are invited to submit original articles and reviews on the subject of advanced membrane technologies for wastewater and solid waste treatment. The contributions may concern (1) advanced membrane technologies for wastewater and solid waste treatment; (2) innovative membrane reactors; (2) energy recovery and carbon source separation; (3) new fouling mitigation strategies; (4) economic and environmental evaluations of membrane reactors; (5) the development of fouling and scaling mechanisms; (6) materials for membrane synthesis; (7) zero discharge membrane processes; and (8) the modelling, design, management, and application of membrane technologies.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Membranes is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2700 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
