Sustainable and Resilient Perspectives in Digital Landscape Architecture and Planning

Dear Colleagues,

Current ecological challenges in landscape architecture and planning are unprecedented in scale, complexity and impact. At the same time, digital technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI) and augmented and virtual reality (AR/VR) are developing faster and becoming more powerful than many imagined, propelled in part by the increasing availability of big data, specifically environmental geodata. Applying such powerful digital tools to landscape design and planning has the potential to create more sustainable and resilient landscapes while including a broader number of stakeholders in decision making; however, it is increasingly difficult for researchers and practitioners to keep up with the state of the art.

The goal of this Special Issue is to collect papers (original research articles and review papers) to give insights about the application or potential for using state-of-the-art AI, AR/VR and big data approaches in the design and planning of landscapes.

With this Special Issue, we aim to publish cutting-edge research on current aspects of digital landscape architecture and planning, e.g., in the collection and analysis of remote sensing data, in landscape planning and visualization. Additionally, we would like to explore the diverse dimensions of landscapes and how digital approaches can address human senses beyond visual representations.

This Special Issue will welcome manuscripts that link the following themes:   

• Potentials and limitations of AI-generated landscape visualizations;     
• Landscape modelling approaches in comparison to AI-based landscape analysis;
• Case studies of applying “novel” geodata sources in digital landscape architecture and planning;
• Case studies in sustainable and resilient digital landscape architecture and planning;
• Case studies in digitally facilitated public participation in landscape architecture and planning.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process.
