Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

With the increasing risk of extreme events on offshore structures in recent years, where exposure and vulnerability are high, the protective and resilient design of these structures is a topic of importance. Offshore structures may be subjected to different natural hazards such as earthquakes, strong winds, hurricanes, tsunamis, scour, landslides, fires, and/or man-made hazards such as impact and blast, as well as environmental and operational deterioration related to material aging, corrosion, and fatigue, etc., during their service life. Because of the low redundancy of offshore structures such as bridges, recognizing their failure behaviors and dynamic responses under extreme loads plays a vital role in the reliability and fail-safe design of these structures. The collapse of Jiujiang Bridge in China due to a collision with a cargo ship in 2007 and chemical explosions in the Port of Beirut, Lebanon in 2020 are examples of catastrophic extreme events on offshore structures that caused the loss of human lives and damage to offshore infrastructure assets. Some of the key research topics in offshore extreme hazards are single/multi-hazard assessments, safety analyses, risk mitigation strategies, as well as performance-based design, resilience-based design, and evaluations of their sustainability and durability, and the protection of offshore assets.

This Special Issue aims to publish the original research and development work related to the performance assessment and design of offshore structures under extreme loads.

Research topics of interest include but are not limited to:

  • Ship–structure collisions (including fixed and floating offshore platforms);
  • Ice–structure interactions;
  • Explosion mechanics;
  • Stochastic methods and reliability analysis;
  • Risk and limit state design approaches;
  • Performance-based design of offshore structures against single/multi-hazards;
  • Resilience-based design of offshore structures (including crashworthiness);
  • Risk analysis of offshore structures exposed to natural hazards and climate extremes including:
    • Corrosion;
    • Fatigue;
    • Material degradation.
  • Hurricane wave loads and tsunamis.
