Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

In recent years, SARS-CoV-2 has been an unfortunate fixture in our clinical, scientific, and personal lives. The COVID-19 pandemic struck fast and hard but, after the first period of shock and confusion, the scientific community found novel ways to collaborate and obtain knowledge about the disease, its consequences, and possible treatments. Now that the pandemic wave has reached a plateau, and vaccines have led to a flattening in the mortality rate, it is time to move into a new phase and address the challenges of managing the long-term sequelae of COVID-19.

As well as the lungs, we know that the cardiovascular system is often impacted by the disease (so-called “cardio-COVID disease”), via a combination of direct infection, thrombosis, and hyperimmune reactions, leading to vasculitis and myocarditis. Additionally, COVID-19 may exacerbate pre-existing cardiovascular conditions.

Huge numbers of raw data were generated at the most intense stage of the pandemic period. Now, it is time to organize these data and take further steps. There is an urgent need for high-level research to allow us to understand the disease, its associated protective or risk factors, and possible therapeutic strategies, as the long-term impact on our patients will be significant.

This Special Issue aims to collect the available research in this field in order to gather valuable insights into the pathogenesis, prognostic implications, and possible therapeutic mechanisms regarding cardio-COVID. We welcome contributions of original research articles and reviews.
