Dear Colleagues,
The presence of hazardous contaminants, defined as any dangerous substance or compound undesirable for living beings in the environment, is a growing global concern for all environmental compartments. Their appearance and persistence in air, soil and water can negatively impact biota and lead to a decrease in quality and overall environmental health. Although the origins of many of them can be natural (e.g., heavy metals, salts, PTEs), for others (e.g., emerging contaminants) anthropogenic activities act as one of the most relevant drivers for contaminant dynamics and enrichment in those compartments. The stability, mobility, bio-availability and accessibility of these chemicals are dependent on the nature of the compounds and their interactions with air, soil and water systems. In this context, the use of chemical analyses supported by geochemical and ecological indices of air, soil and water quality, ecological indicators of biomonitoring (algae, bacteria, fungi, plants and animals) and human risk assessment are common and useful tools to assess the impact of hazardous contaminants on the environmental health status. For this Special Issue, different types of papers (articles, reviews, communication, etc.) able to expand the knowledge on this topic at regional, national or world levels are welcome.
