Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

We are organizing a Special Issue on the contribution of the human microbiome to celiac and non-celiac small bowel enteropathies in the International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health. The venue is a peer-reviewed scientific journal that publishes articles and communications in the interdisciplinary area of environmental health sciences and public health.

The human body harbours a complex microbial-ecological system, known as the human microbiome. This microbiome interacts with the human genetic information and its metabolic functions, at the same time that interacts with the environment where humans develop their social life.

The microbiome has been proposed to be critical in human evolution. Get a better understanding of the interaction of the microbiome with the human body will help to get a better health, prevent disease and improve treatment when prevention fails. Future clinical trials need to be planned considering robust hypothesis that may come for initial approaches through modelling or large data analysis. New technologies, like data mining or machine learning are tools that still have to be widely applied to get knowledge about enteropathies.

The increasing prevalence of adverse reactions to food, like celiac disease and other small bowel enteropathies, has increase the demand of deeper knowledge about the microbiome. The recent COVID19 pandemic have sparked the interest on the impact of life style and environmental factors on shaping the microbiome and its implication for health.

More clarity is needed about the diet factors that drive the changes of the microbiome through the lifespan and how it interacts with the gastrointestinal tract. What is the relevance of the spatial organization of the microbiome in the function of the gastrointestinal tract needs to be better understood.

All these are fields full of questions awaiting answers that can be provided by research teams committed to fill the gaps in the knowledge. With this Special Issue, we invite you to submit high-quality original research articles or reviews that provide solid new findings extending the current knowledge of microbial role in enteropathies. All manuscripts will be peer-reviewed by experts in the field, and would be due no later than the 31th of December 2021.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2500 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
