Dear Colleagues,
Various abiotic and biotic factors negatively affect the service life of wood used in different applications. In nature, these processes are of great importance, but when wood is used for commercial applications, we want to slow down these processes; however, we cannot stop them completely. Nevertheless, numerous wooden structures have stood for centuries, such as the Kirkjubøargarður in the Faroe Islands, Japanese temples, covered bridges in the Alps, Norwegian stave churches, oak half-timbered houses, hayracks in Slovenia, etc. Common features of the respective structures are the right choice of materials, design, and craftsmanship. However, many wooden structures collapse too early, mainly due to the early development of decay. The idea of this Special Issue is to learn from positive examples but also from mistakes made.
In this Special Issue, we aim to analyze each case in detail using the latest monitoring and analytical equipment. These studies can be performed in situ or in the laboratory.
We encourage studies from all areas, including the monitoring of timber objects, protection by design, the analysis of timber objects of historical significance, case studies of recent objects, and construction. Case studies can be on site, in the laboratory, and in field testing.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. Forests is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.
