Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues:

We are excited to invite you to submit an article to a Special Issue titled: The Power of Writing and Reading in Contemporary Times: A Pressing Need for Social Change.

Children and adolescents in schools across the globe continue to face much adversity. Civil unrest, natural disasters, family trauma and/or prejudice and hatred all impact young people’s lives despite a constant call for more compassionate and caring approaches to education.

We advocate for a more robust educational voice that strives for more significant social equity and change, particularly for those most vulnerable in our societies. Using the Sustainable Development Goals (and specifically Goal #4, Quality Education), this Special Issue presents influential projects in teaching reading and writing in contemporary times. Without such research, we are limited in knowing the potentialities of how both traditional and imaginative approaches to reading and writing can empower young people, ultimately reducing inequalities.

As such, we invite you to submit a complete academic article exploring an issue related to teaching reading and writing to create social change. We are interested in innovative and creative approaches to educational policy, pedagogy and assessment in writing and reading. We seek papers from early childhood to senior schooling and those interested in alternative and/or home education environments. Papers should address at least SDG #4 but may also explore other SDGs.

Therefore, suggested themes could include (but are not limited to):

  • Critical literacy approaches to teaching reading and writing;
  • Post-humanist views of reading and writing in contemporary times;
  • Empowering young people’s voices in educational forums;
  • Cultural knowledge and understanding through innovative reading and writing practices;
  • Digital literacies (e.g., games) and/or;
  • Closing the gap of social inequality.

All papers should include: Abstract, Keywords, Introduction, Materials and Methods, Results, Discussion, and Conclusions (optional) sections, with a suggested minimum word count of 4000 words.

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a double-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Education Sciences is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.
