Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

The European Union (EU) has recently reinforced its environmental policies to strengthen the measures in the field of climate change. Thus, for the period 2021-2027 the EU intends to become increasingly greener, with a substantial reduction in carbon emissions. These objectives were approved in the Paris agreement, which was signed by 195 participating countries, distributed geographically across the globe, and came into force on November 4, 2016. Further to these objectives, the agreement also approved goals for energy transition, aiming to combat climate change and promote energy from renewable sources, thus, making nations more sustainable and greener. Countries that signed the agreement are trying their utmost to divert financing from structural funds towards innovation policies based on the challenges associated with sustainability

In this context, entrepreneurial ecosystems became more relevant as they have more impact on the economic policies of a substantial number of nations. Therefore, the concept of business ecosystems offers a new perspective on the geographical grouping of economic activity. Moreover, the regional development strategy policies promoted around the world, are focused on continuous technological evolution, entrepreneurship, and innovation. Consequently, ecosystems are matters that have aroused the interest of researchers.

Being so, it is essential to establish a relationship between business ecosystems and the everyday ecological praxis in societies. This can be achieved through global and regional environmental initiatives, and through the application of good practices in waste management, recycling, reuse, and, ultimately, sustainable development. Regional actors, such as governments, industry, and universities should be able to include these good practices into their objectives, always with close attention to the economic aspect, since being sustainable and economically viable is difficult to manage and reconcile.

To bring new contributions to sustainable economic development, the special issue “Sustainability and Innovation in Entrepreneurial Ecosystems: Data-Driven Approaches” aims to receive articles that result from data mining, such as systematic literature reviews and bibliometric analyzes (may accept others) on the subjects under investigations. The data must be collected in large scientific repositories, such as the Web of Science and Scopus (others can be accepted).

Potential topics should include (but are not limited to):

  • New techniques for data mining in sustainability, innovation, and entrepreneurial ecosystems;
  • Sustainability promoted by entrepreneurship;
  • Sustainable entrepreneurship and sustainable innovations;

Sustainability of Urbanization, Non-Agricultural Output and Air Pollution in the World’s Top 20 Polluting Countries

Rapid urbanization is being increasingly recognized as a significant factor of environmental pollution across the world. However, the significance of sustainable urbanization in controlling both pollution and population remains either limited in scope, in the case of developed countries, or less researched, in the case of developing nations. To fill this gap, the present study employed both theoretical and empirical tools to investigate the significant link between sustainable urbanization, pollution and non-agricultural output. In order to empirically examine the supposed link among the key variables mentioned above, the present study considered a panel of the world’s top 20 polluting countries for the 1991–2018 period, which significantly includes both developed and developing nations. Panel vector error correction model and panel co-integration techniques were employed to derive the possible correlation between the variables through sustainable urbanization. Empirical findings show an absence of equilibrium relations among the three variables in the panel of developed countries. However, the study clearly finds that all the three indicators maintain long-run associations for the panel of developing countries. Furthermore, in the short run, the results determine unambiguously that there are significant causal interplays between any two sets of variables and the remaining one variable for both the panel data of developed and developing countries. On the other hand, short-run interplays among the variables we considered exist for both developed and developing economies. From the perspective of policy formulation, the present study shows that policy makers from both the developed and developing nations should be cautious before encouraging urbanization, at least in the short term. However, the combined effects in the short and long term suggest policy makers should be more careful before encouraging urbanization in developing economies. Full article
