Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Wound healing and regenerative medicine have undergone vast advances since new developments in bioengineering and the discovery of growth factors and stem cells. This Special Issue will present current understandings of the (patho)physiology of wound healing, difficult healing, and problems of chronic wounds. New therapeutic approaches will be discussed, including the use of “natural products” such as growth factors and stem cells and the development of innovative therapeutics, e.g., other biologics (besides growth factors). Advances in plastic and orthopedic surgery will inform readers about new techniques aimed at reconstructing parts of our bodies damaged by burns (including skin substitutes), accidents, and congenital defects, to name just a few of the problems being targeted. In addition, a significant portion of the Special Issue will be dedicated to exploring the contribution of bioengineering to wound healing. The natural and artificial scaffolding for deep wounds and reconstruction, the role of 3D printing in construction of scaffolds and of new organs, the construction of new tissues, such as cartilage and tendons in vitro, synthetic materials, the use of nanoparticles, and the use of natural polymers in the reconstruction of nerve conduits are just some of the modalities to be explored in this issue.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. Bioengineering is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.
