Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Substance use disorders are considered to be a major contributor to the global burden of disease, significantly causing or contributing to a large number of somatic and psychiatric conditions, as well as secondary harmful effects such as injuries, accidents, violent behaviors, and suffering for significant others.

The research field of psychological treatments of substance use disorders has rapidly expanded during the last years. We know that several psychological methods are efficacious in the treatment of substance use disorders, but several challenges still exist. For example, only a minority of those in need are reached with treatment. Further, important knowledge regarding which treatment components are efficacious are lacking, as well as knowledge on factors that affect treatment outcome, such as patient characteristics, contextual factors, and mode of treatment delivery. Further, there is still a lack of well-designed studies investigating treatments for patients with substance use disorders who suffer from co-morbid psychiatric conditions.

In this Special Issue, we provide you with an opportunity to present original research on novel approaches for the treatment of substance use disorders. Also, studies with a focus on mechanisms of treatment efficacy and of the change of addictive behaviors are of great interest. We welcome different study designs such as randomized trials, laboratory based studies, prospective studies, and brain imaging studies. We are interested in studies on different target populations such as adults, young adults, and adolescents.
