Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

For decades, concrete and reinforced concrete structures have been widely used in earthquake-resistant structures worldwide due to their superior performance in providing resilient seismic load resisting systems. However, damages observed in previous earthquakes have clearly demonstrated the poor seismic performance and vulnerability of substandard buildings designed based on old standards and simplified design methods. These problems have been well recognised by the research community, and therefore, in the last two decades, new earthquake-resistant design methods such as performance-based design (PBD) and resilience-based design (RBD) have progressed significantly. On the other hand, recent advancements in analysis methods as well as advanced testing and numerical modeling techniques have provided the opportunity to adopt more sophisticated design methodologies, and various design codes have been appropriately revised. However, the field faces continuous evolution, and further improvements are required both in fundamental studies and in practical applications.

This Special Issue of Applied Sciences, “Concrete and Reinforced Concrete Structures Under Earthquake Loading”, is intended for a wide and interdisciplinary audience and covers recent research advances and new developments including the aforementioned challenges in the following topics:

  • Innovative solutions for seismic and retrofitting of existing concrete and reinforced concrete structures;
  • Underground structures, soil–structure interaction and foundations under earthquake loading;
  • Laboratory, in situ testing and structural health monitoring of earthquake-resistant structures;
  • Seismic analysis, design, retrofit and strengthening of concrete and RC structures, retaining walls, dams, slopes;
  • Advanced numerical methods (finite elements and boundary elements) for linear and non-linear earthquake analysis and design;
  • Design optimisation of concrete and RC structures under earthquake loading.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Applied Sciences is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2400 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
