Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Nowadays, dye chemistry is a hot topic of research. Such success has gone hand in hand with the recent modern avenues in organic synthesis, which allow the tailor-made design of chromophores. In particular, those organic molecules that able to display fluorescence emissions are in the spotlight and are being intensively applied for biological purposes. Indeed, bioimaging is likely one of the most commonly used methods to monitor biochemical events in real time by following the fluorescence emissions under a fluorescence microscope. Accordingly, big efforts are being made to develop stable and bright fluorescent probes or to label target biomolecules for diagnosis purposes. Moreover, the induction of new photophysical phenomena by substitution pattern (such as electron or charge transfer, and intersystem crossing) paves the way to apply dyes in light-driven sensing and therapy, respectively. As a result, organic dyes are also currently applied as chemosensors to monitor the properties of the surrounding environment or to detect and quantify the presence of certain analytes (ions or molecules). In this regard, an alternative procedure triggered by light has deserved the great attention that it has received in the context of treating tumoral cells. This methodology is based on the ability of some organic molecules to generate singlet oxygen in situ through energy transfer from their triplet state to the ambient oxygen. Singlet oxygen is a cytotoxic species able to destroy tumors with lower side effects than the conventional treatments. As a consequence, an active search is also going on to design multifunctional fluorophores capable of simultaneous detection and treatment (theragnosis).

The aim of this Special Issue is to attract world-leading researchers in the area of organic synthesis, physical chemistry and biochemistry to detail the state of the art and highlight the latest advances in the design and performance of organic molecules for biological applications.
