Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Ocean-based systems represent a selection of equipment and systems that operate in sea conditions. These systems rely on human intervention for their installation, operation, and maintenance, and they are increasingly used for energy production, e.g., fossil fuels and traditional and renewable energy exploration. The advent of artificial intelligence (AI) has provided an opportunity to improve the design, deployment, and management of these systems by reducing human intervention to improve efficiency and safety. AI-based methods encompass a diverse set of capabilities, including predictive analytics, pattern recognition, natural language processing, recommendation systems, optimization, simulation and modeling, among others. However, these problems are often too intricate to be effectively solved by simply applying AI algorithms directly to the target area. AI-based engineering applications pose several challenges, including issues related to (i) the security and reliability of AI applications, (ii) the interpretability of AI-based models, (iii) the quality and availability of data for AI, and (iv) the maintainability of AI models, among other factors.

Therefore, the aim of this Special Issue is to publish articles that focus on engineering applications and the exploration of artificial intelligence technology to innovatively address ocean engineering challenges. We encourage authors to submit research on machine learning, intelligent control systems, predictive maintenance, intelligent fault diagnosis, and other AI applications relevant to ocean-based systems. Of particular interest are studies that demonstrate how AI enhances engineering efficiency, quality, reliability, and sustainability. We welcome experimental research, case studies, as well as review articles to collectively explore the cutting edge of artificial intelligence in ocean-based applications and provide valuable insights for addressing future challenges. Original research and review articles related but not limited to the following topics are welcomed:

  • Performance estimation of ocean-based systems;
  • Design, manufacture, and analysis tools of ocean-based systems;
  • Intelligent methodologies regarding operation and maintenance of ocean-based systems;
  • Intelligent fault diagnostics, prognostics, and post-prognostics;
  • Intelligent decision making;
  • Interpretability of neural networks;
  • Industrial information integration;
  • AI-enhanced multi-physics modeling, simulation, and optimization;
  • Intelligent transportation systems and smart vehicles.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process.
