Dear Colleagues,
Biotechnology is an activity that humanity has used and benefited from for more than 6000 years, starting from when man prepared food such as cheeses, bread and fermented vegetables, to now with the production of vaccines and antibiotics. Thus, biotechnology is defined as the use of biological systems and living organisms for the generation of strategies and procedures that produce benefits for human beings, as well as for the planet on which we live. It is one of the disciplines that has advanced the most in recent years due to its great relationship and interaction with other disciplines, showing a wide spectrum of applications within four main areas:
health, agriculture and food, non-food uses of agriculture (biodegradable plastics, vegetable oils, biofuels) and the environment.
However, due to the scientific and technological progress that has been achieved in these different areas in recent years, there are still other challenges, for example, in the area of health, such as the detection of molecular markers present in body fluids from humans, which could be indicators of different types of diseases, including cancer and other conditions that are still difficult to diagnose, and are expensive to apply in low-income populations. Another example of a biotechnological challenge that has not yet been resolved is the resistance to antibiotics by some types of pathogenic microorganisms. Natural substances present in plant extracts or drugs designed in silico through molecular dynamics modeling could work as a treatment to eliminate such pathogens that mainly affect the hospital population .
The purpose of this Special Issue is to disseminate the most relevant results that take a biotechnological approach for solving problems related to the diagnosis of diseases in humans, as well as in new treatments capable of combating pathogenic microorganisms that are characterized by resistance to antibiotics.

Applied Sciences is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
