Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Over the latest years, a major concern in terms of water management and environmental science has been the detection and effects of emerging contaminants in the aquatic environments of waterbodies worldwide. Among these contaminants of emerging concern, many of them are xenobiotics with an anthropogenic origin, comprising important groups such as pharmaceuticals, pesticides, and microplastics, which pose serious threats to ecosystems and biodiversity, and, ultimately, even to human health.

Hence, it is of utmost importance to monitor the presence of xenobiotics in waters and to conduct studies that contribute to defining transfer and transformation pathways, to assess their impact at individual levels of the trophic chain, and to characterize their potential toxicity. Additionally, relevant epidemiological information related to lifestyle habits, public health, and wellbeing can be obtained from chemical analysis of wastewater since they hold a reflection of many of current society's habits and trends.

Furthermore, the need to improve the wastewater treatment efficiency targeting this group of pollutants is one of today's top priorities.

The goals of this Special Issue are to collect some of the most recent research focused on xenobiotic water pollutants, towards the development of a framework of wastewater-based epidemiology studies that can be used as a reliable and complementary approach to monitor and back-estimate the amounts and types of substances used by defined population groups, as well as to present alternative or complementary wastewater treatment technologies with potentially relevant efficiencies in the removal of this group of pollutants.
