Dear Colleagues,
Poor gill health causes severe suffering and losses in the aquaculture industry. The gill is a multifunctional organ with respiration being its main role, in addition to, for example, ion regulation, oxygen sensing and immune function. Therefore, compromised gills will impact the whole fish. Gills are delicate structures directly exposed to the environment, and the causes of gill diseases are diverse. The current literature regarding gill diseases is mainly descriptive. Disease development linked to etiologies and how observed changes affect the gill functions and hence the fish are surprisingly poorly understood. We invite original research that identifies gill challenges, and approaches that contribute to our understanding of how organ changes relate to impaired function are particularly welcome. This Special Issue will focus on research that sheds light on the pathophysiology, including the immunology, of compromised gills.
