Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Recently, with the rapid development of wireless communication and embedded computing technologies, a lot of research activities have been dedicated to the fields of cyber physical systems (CPS). Examples include smart grid, green building, industry 4.0, health care, transportation, etc. In CPS, sensors are involved in monitoring the physical environment, while actuators execute specific actions in response to the data provided by the networks. Therefore, CPS combines the benefits of wireless sensor networks (WSN) and networked control systems (NCS). A closed loop is formed to integrate cyber and physical worlds. The goals, at both the device and network levels, are the same: efficiency, reliability, and safety. However, the design of such systems is a challenging task, as CPS are hierarchical. It is important to design novel resource self-management mechanisms, to avoid out-of-order and out-of-time execution of queries and commands due to the lack of proper resource allocation and scheduling between sensors and actuators. It also includes architecture modeling, theories of quality of service (QoS), routing protocols, and optimization methods to specify, analyze, synthesize and simulate system performance, safety and reliability, under different application requirements. The topics of interest for this Special Issue include but are not limited to:

  • CPS applications (e.g., for assisted living, emergency services, smart homes, smart cities, smart energy management, etc.)
  • Communication protocols, routing protocols, and scheduling algorithms
  • Estimation and control mechanisms designed for sensors and actuators
  • Safety, reliability, fault tolerance
  • Real-time computation and communication
  • Low-power design, energy management
  • Architectures and methods for embedded system design and hardware and software co-design

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Actuators is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2400 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.

In recent years, with the upgrading of the attack technology, stealthy DoS jamming attacks have become the primary factor to threaten the security of Industrial Cyber-Physical Systems (ICPS). Considering the complex industrial scenarios of ICPS, which are influenced by a variety of external and internal interference, a H controller designing problem is studied in this paper for an ICPS which deploys a hybrid-triggered mechanism (HTM) in the wireless channel encountering stealthy DoS jamming attacks. By employing a compensation mechanism which is employed in the controller to mitigate the impacts of attacks, external disturbance, limited channel capacity, wireless channel noise, we establish a closed-loop system and prove the closed-loop system is mean square exponentially stable and can achieve the desired H disturbance rejection level theoretically. Finally, simulation examples are used to demonstrate effectiveness of the proposed H controller. Full article

With the continuous development of wireless sensor network (WSN) technology, WSN has gradually become one of the key technologies of the Internet, and is widely used in indoor target location technology. However, the obstacles will have a great influence on the distance measurement, and it will result in a large positioning error. Therefore, how to deal with the non-line-of-sight (NLOS) error becomes an important problem. In this paper, Interacting Multiple Model (IMM) was used to identify NOLS/LOS. The NLOS probability was calculated by Markov transform probability, and the likelihood function was calculated by extended Kalman filter (EKF). The NLOS probability was compared with the LOS probability to judge whether the measurement contained the NLOS error. A robust algorithm combining IMM model with semidefinite programming (IMM-SDP) was proposed. The improved convex programming algorithm was proposed to reduce the NLOS error. Simulation and experimental results showed that the proposed algorithm can effectively reduce the influence of NLOS error and achieve higher positioning accuracy compared with the existing positioning methods.
